TCAF has come and gone. Three weeks later and I can look
back and say this year was a big success.
My newest book, Tuff Stuff, sold out! 50 copies! That’s pretty good! I also
sold a bunch of other books as well. Due to my incredible record keeping, I
will never know for sure, but I think I can say with a fair amount of
confidence that this might have been my BEST TCAF EVA!

My high sales this year were certainly buoyed by the release
of my new book Tuff Stuff which I finished just in time for TCAF. For real,
just in time. I finished printing the covers Saturday at 230 in the morning.

A nice thing that was reassuring; people who were new to my
work were gravitating towards Tuff Stuff. This is a good sign! People seemed to
like the cover!

very welcome.

A short note on Tuff Stuff. It turned out to be 59 pages. I
inked the whole thing in one month. I then lettered it in two days. I am pretty
happy with the end result but because of the speed with which I turned it out
there are some grammatical errors in this first edition. I will be posting the revised version up on
my website in the next week or so. Keep your eyes peeled for that. I will also
be printing a second edition of the book, with the edits done, in time for my
next show. It will also be available on my website to purchase here.

In my previous post I spoke about having three new books to release this year at TCAF. This is the second of those three books. It is called 'Ennui'. This book is leather bound, 32 pages with silkscreen Interiors. The book consists of eight different illustrations all featuring two layers of silkscreening. This book is limited to eight editions, of which seven will be for sale at TCAF, hand numbered and signed. First come first serve.

This is what the illustration look like on the interior of the book. As you can seem they are all full bleed and totally baller. These next four illustrations below are also in the book. These are the line art versions. So this here is a cover I did for Fred Kennedy's 'The Whores Son' novella, available now on Kindle! Check it out! Below is a process GIF of how I got to this final product. I should mention I stole my final cover scheme from a pretty iconic XMEN cover. Anyhoo..good times.

So this is one of three planned new books I will have for TCAF this year. This one is a limited edition of seven, six of which will be for sale. All hand bound in leather, 19 individual two layer silkscreens some featuring degradaies (sp).
This new work is a repurposing,
in a collage style, of the work from my comics practice into new arrangements bound
together within a book. This process allows me to recontextualize the imagery
and meanings of my original pages to create new messages out of pre-existing
narratives. Each
page is independent from the source material and becomes its own individual piece;
meaning is contained within each image. Colour is
introduced in the form of imagery and text. It is used to add to the
composition, subvert or reinforce the meanings found within each piece.
It is important to emphasize that not all of these books are
2013 releases. This list reflects when I read these books. I am also going to
make a point of not talking about close friends books. Integrity and all that.
Here we go.

This year I finally tracked down this long out of print
collection of some of Otomo’s short stories. Spoilers, it is really good. Highlights
are Magnetic Rose and the spiritual predecessor
to Akira and Domu called Fireball. You
can find these occasionally on EBAY for about 60-80 bones. Well worth the
investment.

Jim Rugg is one of my absolute faves on the comic’s
scene. His sense of humour and
incredible drawing ability combine to make some of the most potent comic works
out there. This most recent magazine is a collection of short strips that Rugg
has collected alongside a bunch of one sheet advertisements and pinups. This is
not exactly a comic book as it is an anthology of Rugg. Super mag is a place that allows Rugg’s ample design chops a chance
to shine all the while showing off great little strips like US Ape and Duke
Armstrong that work as shorts but might not be able to sustain their own full
length book.

This book was a long wait but well worth it. Creating a book
that appeals to kids while still appealing to his legions of adult fans is
quite the trick. Pope accomplishes this with aplomb by mashing in influences any
long time comic fan can recognize while covering each page in his trademark
rich inks and style. One major drawback
to this book is its size. Pope draws his originals larger than most and the
transition to a child friendly size hurts the work. A teaser of the first 24
pages of the book that was released in a single floppy issue format further
emphasises this weakness. Compared side by side with the finished book it is
hard to not regret the format decision.

This is the first sports comic I ever really got into. It is
all about a newbie with a lot of potential learning to play BBall with his
high-school team. There is a lot of HS drama, which I love, and some over the
top fight stuff, which is okay. The vast majority of it though is hard-core
realistic basketball games. The first game, which is a scrimmage, takes three
200 page volumes to finish. It is very thorough. Dribbling, passing, boxing
out, shooting, rebounding. We learn as the main character learns and we get
invested. The stakes of these games combined with all the motivations for the
characters all really make the results matter. PS the drawing is first rate and
the games scenes really move. I wish there was a hockey comic like this. I
might have to try my hand at one.

I love this long running strip. It is ramping up, it seems,
for some big status quo shifts in 2014. Eve and the Gang are all getting out of
the cute messing up your life section of your 20’s and are, it seems, about to
get a bit more serious. The revelations and quiet moments have all been really
impactful this year. Gran keeps getting better and better and I am really
dreading/looking forward to what she puts these characters through next.

After one issue it was crystal clear where this story was
going and how it was going to get there. Three issues in all my guesses were
right, despite that though the ride has been very entertaining in large part
due to Frank Quietly’s art which is worth the price of admission alone. In a
year where supporting a questionable artist’s art (Orson Scott Card) became a
big issue, Mark Millar is a bit of lightning rod in the comics scene. This
story is thus far my favorite of Millar’s since Authority, which I guess
unsurprisingly also featured Quietly on art. So yeah, story is okay, predictable but fun
and violent, the art is an 11 out of 10.

I have been reading a lot about the Genocide in Herero. There is a theory that it along with the genocide at Maji-Maji are the start of a continuity of genocides by Germany in the 20th century. I had never heard any of this before. I wasn't even aware of these two genocides! Here is Cap punching Hitler. I drew this at the Stadium free comic book day event around halloween.

Since we last spoke, dearest blog, MONSTROSITY launched to great fanfare and success at FanExpo. Phil and I sold the crap out of the book and even managed to line up some exciting new creators for MONSTROSITY II; THE RECKONING (title not finalized). Here is Friendly Phil McClorey and I at our table captured at an inopportune time! Pizza anger face! Note I am rocking an awesome Corey Lewis shirt made for the Comic Book Legal Defence Fund, available here.

MONSTROSITY arrived at my door this past Friday! I am happy and relieved to say it looks awesome. Alterna, our publisher, did a great job of printing it. The blacks are black and the cover really pops. The book weighs in at 200 pages and includes stories from over thirty different creators. I want to thank all the indiegogo contributors again for helping this book happen. Phil (my co-editor) and I are still overwhelmed at the incredible response. We are officially releasing the book next Thursday at Fan expo and starting to send the books out the following Monday. If you are interested in picking up your book and various other contribution rewards at Fan expo just swing buy our table, A357. If you missed out on the indie-gogo but still want the book and can't make it to Fan expo, it is currently available in this months Previews, the order code is AUG13 0934. If you can't make it to Fanexpo, FEAR NOT! We will be having a number of signings to celebrate the release of the book including events at Paradise Comics and Stadium Comics.Brian Evinouhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09286835787087690236noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21178509.post-4625349589701435802013-07-31T23:01:00.001-04:002013-07-31T23:01:59.753-04:00July Round Up! A couple months back I got the opportunity to be a part of J.Torres excellent anthology True Patriot! My pals Adam Gorham and Fred Kennedy created a story but needed a colorist and approached me! I was very happy to do it! Inspired by the Nao of Brown I water colored the comic. Here is the second page above. There is going to be a release party for the book at many locations coming up including the Dragon and The Comic Book Lounge. Swing on by and pick up a copy. It is balling.
So the last month I have been pretty busy working on my next mini, tentatively called Tuff Stuff. As with the Jim & Jenn to Psychic Drama and the Space Cops to Sassy Mavericks transition this hardly means the name is set in stone. So far I am 28 pages into the book and it is looking like it is going to hit the fifty page range which will make it my biggest single story since Psychic Drama. Really the book is a prologue for a much larger work, but I don't know if I will ever get that far. Here is what 28 pages look like so far.
This is Friendly Phil McClorey and mines table setup at C2E2! We had a great time and a pretty great show. I would love to go back. Chicago is a nice city that I didn't see nearly enough of. We did see a Blackhawks game which was pretty awesome.

Our indie go-go was a succcess as well. Thanks to everyone who contributed in everyway. I love you all. We got a bit over our goal and that allowed us to get a slightly thicker cardstock for the cover. Its going to be bad ass.
Whoa! What a nice cover! That is way nicer than the old one!..is what I hope you think. So, how did I get to this amazing final version...well..it is a little story that goes a little something like this.

I had a rough doodle that I scanned and brought into Photoshop. I cleaned up this one after working on a bunch of variations on this final pose. Then I printed the final red version very lightly onto some large paper. I inked that up with my brush pen, scanned it and brought it back into Photoshop where I pulled the reds out leaving me with this pristine B&W.

A little bit of photoshop magic is next and I do this final mock-up of my design. I am happy so I then fill all the green with black, and print two sheets of paper. One for each color on bond paper. Going into the print studio, I soak those sheets in vegetable oil, dry them and then shoot the images onto my silkscreen. Then I tear a shit ton of paper to the proper dimensions and get to printing.

Layer one! Each color is one layer. For my comic covers I always go for two layers. One color and then black for the line art. Since I print a ton of these each time any more layers would be too time intensive.

The magic happens with layer two! Look at those blacks! I had problems with the registration on this run and registered them all up by hand. The results were fantastic. Looks like I will be going that route for-eva-eva now.

Done! Here is a detail!

I get home assemble the 48 new Fight Songs and then compare them to the weakling previous version. What a shitty old cover that was. I bet it feels shame.

So I will be premiering these bad boys at C2E2 in Chicago this coming weekend. Swing on by, I will be sitting with good pals Phil McClorey, Adam Gorham and Fred Kennedy.

Also this Friday Phil and I will be launching an indie gogo campaign for our next Anthology called Monstrosity! This thing is going to be awesome. We lined up a bunch of great talent and are looking forward to showing it off. Check out the blog for details..and I will update soon with the indie go-go site when it goes live.
If you are looking for something to do this weekend I will be at Toronto Comic-Con alongside my Friendly Phil McClorey at table A157, come check us out! The show is at the Metro Convention Center Saturday and Sunday and...it features the full cast of TNG! THE StarTrek in my humble opinion. In honour of those excellent space-farers I thought I would do up a Sassy Mavericks watercolor!Brian Evinouhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09286835787087690236noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21178509.post-24095110309695575742013-02-03T13:09:00.001-05:002013-03-06T09:06:21.340-05:00Hourly Comic Day 2013

A couple weeks ago I was at the Quintessential comix fundraiser doing sketches to raise money for Alice's show..Here are a couple drawings from that event. The Top one is Destroyer, I had only read the Kirkman/ Walker updated version which is awesome so this was interesting trying out this version of the character. The bottom is of course Venom, this one was done for my buddy Tyrone who runs Guerilla Printing, check em out. Anyhow, the event was a big success and I got to hang with some cool dudes.Brian Evinouhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09286835787087690236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21178509.post-57058830862220486842013-01-19T00:03:00.000-05:002013-01-19T00:03:39.741-05:00Wolverine like a boss.

Guys, I love me some Wolverine..but the old one..you know the one who could be killed and wore this awesome orange and brown number. Sometimes I wish that when X-Men launched that in issue 3 Magneto just won and all the X-Men died and we forever had the perfect time capsule of those 150 issues of Uncanny before things got shitty.

I read this book on the way home from the Kazoo small press comics expo in Guelph, Dalton Sharp had picked up a copy and it had just won the award for book of the show, so I was very curious. The Libertarian is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. It is unrelenting. The simple style of Nick’s drawings had with his first book, Streakers, kept me away but upon reading a few pages of The Libertarian I became very charmed by his drawings and found them an engaging partner to the incredible writing. Very smart, sharp cutting dialogue and a scathing response to extreme politics make The Libertarian one of the very best books of 2012.
Fuckitor Jason Karns

I discovered Fuckitor like the rest of the world because of this article on the Comics Journal by comic superman Jim Rugg (who draws great comics and also hosts one of my fave podcasts). Fuckitor is the first comic that my girlfriend has told me she hates and it is easy to see why. It is all the same reasons I love it. Fuckitor is an ongoing anthology comic; each issue has two to three short stories inside. All of the stories are roided out versions of 80’s horror/fantasy/ sci-fi direct to VHS movies. They are generally about monsters, Nazi’s, zombies or whatever else that enjoys eviscerating teenagers. The language in the books is intense, they feature nudity and violence which can be sexual and is always very graphic. The presentation of Fuckitor is one thing that my lady and I both agreed on. It is awesome. Karns uses a tricked out printer to print out every issue himself in full colour. The paper he uses and the colour settings combine to make Fuckitor look like a book that was released in ’78 instead of being printed a week before you got it in your mailbox. Which is another thing that makes Fuckitor awesome, the effort required to get it. Karns is from all indications, essentially a comics recluse. A modern day Ditko. Karn’s likes Rugg’s work, with whom he shares many of the same sensibilities, but he thinks most comics are shit. He doesn’t do conventions and shows no real interest in getting his work out there to a wider audience; his stuff is only available through mail order. This added challenge of getting his work and his rock star apathy add a mystique that is very rare in comics today.
I have always been super curious about Love and Rockets, specifically Jaime’s work which really appeals to my sensibilities. Over the years I have read a few volumes here and there but this year with all the hype of the 30th anniversary I went out and bought every volume of Jaime’s work right up until the most recent New Stories Vol. 5 and plowed through them all. It is an amazing body of work. It is easy to imagine how connected to Maggie and Hopey someone would be if they started reading all the way back in ’82. Even for someone who read their entire story over a month and a half let me assure you the connection is still very strong. By the time I got to the final pages of New Stories Vol. 4 climatic Love Bunglers story line there were a lot of emotions going on through my heart and mind. Vol. 5 is the volume that came out this year. In it Jaime is setting up more stories with newer characters as the main story of Maggie seems to be done. Vol. 5 is not the strongest of Jaime’s work but the great wealth of material that I read this year that makes up the Locas storyline is incredibly rich and fulfilling and makes me have to include this book on my list to make up for all the years of missing it. Especially last year’s incredible Vol. 4 which had I read it then would have likely been my book of the year for 2011. As for Gilbert’s work, while it has never appealed to me as much as Jaime’s, I am preparing to begin his Palomar stories from the beginning and am hoping to be similarly transfixed.

Dungeon Quest is a fantasy book but it is might be a coming of age story about early twenty somethings in Suburbia..I really loved the first two volumes of Dungeon Quest so I had high expectations when I grabbed a copy of volume 3. I was pretty stunned when I picked it up. This thing is twice the size of volumes 1 or 2! So, lots and lots of content. Dungeon Quest is about two friends who seem to live in a seemingly ordinary world who decide to go off on an adventure. The book borrows many of the conventions of role playing games, for example walking through their town they get into fights with street toughs and level up. At the point in the story where vol. 3 picks up the real world elements are far behind us in favor of full blown fantasy. Lots of fight scenes, awesome relics and also a very heavy serving of penis. The boys at one point get robbed of all they have and are forced to adventure in the buff for a good hundred pages. Daly has a lot of fun drawing the penises. Lots of character. Seriously, he is having a great time drawing all these penises. Another thing I love about the adventure in Dungeon Quest is the journey. I think in fantasy comics getting across the length of the journey is a real difficult thing when you only have so many pages. This can often make epics in comics not feel so epic. Daly is not afraid to use five pages to just show the party wandering. It really adds meat to the world building and the journey. I am not sure how many more volumes Dungeon Quest is going to have, I loved this entry and hope for many more but I don’t want it to fall into the going on for too long trap some series get into. I worry that this could end with them finishing the adventure and it is revealed that the adventurers have been around a D&D table the whole time, but I hope not.

Jesse Jacobs’ books are so strange, his design sense so unique and his stories are so evocative. This one is about three god like creatures and their arguments over their creations. Their creations allow Jacobs’ to showcase his love of isometric design and allows him to use his unique two tone colouring style to great effect. There is something I think about his imagery that gives his books this great sense of mystery. By This Shall you Know Him is Jacob’s first book with Koyama and they allowed him to do some sexy things with the paper stock. The Books features a really nice feeling carboard-ie stock that make you want to have it in your hands as long as possible. It becomes a really nice part of the reading experience. This is a great book. If you like some mind bending challenging work with a unique visual language this is the one for you.
Pope Hats #3 Ethan Rilly

Pope Hats is about a law clerk and her actress roommate. The Clerk is the responsible one, seeming to have everything figured out while the Actress is more relaxed about things. This issue seems to be an Empire Strikes Back type issue for Pope Hats. The Actress has a big job offer that will see her leave Toronto and the Clerk is in the middle of some alarming office politics which seem to be making her question her life choices. The tone overall is much darker, but Rilly’s humour and charming drawing never make it a slog to read. Pope Hats #1 was awesome but with #2 and now #3 we have seen Rilly raise his illustrative game dramatically. The strength of his line and his deceptively simple looking compositions make Pope Hats one of the easiest to look at books out there. The writing is also fantastic. Very funny and hints at depths that I am hoping will be fulfilled by the completion of the series. Adhouse is the publisher of Pope Hats and I am glad they are supporting the single issue format. I feel like a lot of publishers would of wanted to "wait for the trade", but I think here the single issue format really works nice. And it lets us get more Rilly covers which are always very strong.
I recently was thinking of a different much darker ending to Psychic Drama. The process of making Psychic Drama was such a long one, I had practically finished it and then decided it was going all wrong so I ended up restarting it. Looking back at the original version I kind of enjoy how blood thirsty it was where as the version that is up on my website is a much more talky version. I think the happy medium was probably somewhere in the middle. Anyhow, I ain't doing that comic a third time. The ending I was thinking about features a much bleaker future for Jim where he is no longer deemed fit to be allowed out in society and is just the focus of on-going testing, kind of like the esper-kids in Akira except with more exposed brains.
Anyhoo, here is a water colour for you all. It was kind of inspired by the print ads for the "Fall of the Mutants" X-Men storyline that can be found in all Marvel comics from that era.Brian Evinouhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09286835787087690236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21178509.post-77381466086350406772012-12-01T11:47:00.001-05:002012-12-01T11:47:10.262-05:00Tuff Stuff

Hey everybody! I have been pretty busy around these parts working on all sorts of fun stuff. A few weeks ago I did the 24 hour comic challenge with my buddy Steve Sloan. For the last few years I have been approaching the 24 hour comic challenge differently. I like to now just work on a comic when I am there at a normal pace for as long as possible making work that I am happy with instead of rushing out a piece of poop. That was how I started Don River and Sassy Mavericks. By the time I finish end up going back and reworking entire pages but I find it productive to work on something I will be happy with rather than something I just crank out. Anyhow, at the end of the night I think we both came up with some pretty fun work.
Also I plugging away at a second Astro Jaq story for friendly Phil McClorey. This one is going to be going into our forthcoming Monster anthology that we will be releasing at next years Fan Expo. The talent we have put together for this next book is looking really good. I am very excited to see what the complete book looks like because the pedigree is very strong.
On top of that I am still slowly slogging away at the structure for my big book. I have a ton of sketches and concepts done but the writing is seriously dragging. I think at this point the plan is to have a new mini out for TCAF and then hopefully I can have the longer book ready for the following year. Anyhoo....Hope you are all doing well. I will be back prolly in a couple of weeks with my year in review blog post. I have read some good comics this year and have some opinions to share.
Oh and I hope you like this water colour. Did this last night, bought some new water colours. This character may be in my new mini..
Stadium Comics hosted me and a whole bunch of other awesome artists last weekend. Met some nice people and drew some fun ol' drawings. Thought I would post some of the results here. Drew a whole bunch of superheroes! I broke out some of my ol' favs. Cyclops in the classic X-Factor costume was inspired by Cykes' recent murder of Prof X! What was that all about? Lame Marvel. Magneto! My fav villain from my childhood. This pose was a from memory homage to Jim Lees opening two page spread from X Men #1 (the best selling comic book of all time.), looking it up now, I see I did not quite get it right.. Hulk! I only had two ink colours with me, red and blue. I was so confused about what to do, then Phil told me that Hulk is red now! Perfect! The Superman was my first drawing, he is flying through space! That's cool!
Anyhow, good times. Thanks to Stadium, all the people who stopped by and all my brothers and sisters on the front lines of the funny books!Brian Evinouhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09286835787087690236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21178509.post-90994237583601965432012-10-25T11:06:00.000-04:002012-10-25T11:11:18.061-04:00Total Victory

This is an example of a mock up I do before going to the print shop to do a new screenprint. So this one is about the victory of the Quebec Student Union over the evil Liberal Government led by Jean Charest. I will post photos of the finished print next week and we can see how close to this we get.
In comics news I have a signing this Saturday at Stadium Comics in Brampton. Plenty of other super talented folks will be there like, Phil McClorey, Adam Gorham, Fred Kennedy and various others. Please come on by and check it out! I think it should be a lot of fun!

New Cover to Sassy Mavericks! This is printed as a silkscreen, two layers. The interiors also have been tweaked. This is the ultimate version of this book and the one that will be kept in print from now on. I am very happy to have this version out. Space Cops featured a bunch of problems that I am really happy I was able to iron out. Also did some tweaks to Don River. I am quite pleased with how it has all turned out!

Sorry guys. As you can see, I am still drawing. Since I last checked in there has been Fanexpo and Word on the Street. They were both awesome shows. Thanks to all who stopped by! I sold out of the first printing of Sassy Mavericks and the umpteenth printing of Don River. There are plans for a revised cover for the next printing of Sassy Mavericks and a silk screened cover for Fight Song. Here have some drawings!
