2011, A Year in Review!

2011 is on it's last gasp! That means it's that time of year again where I look back on the year in comics and tell you all about some of my favs! Hopefully this will shine some light on some deserving souls, there is always more comics to be sold! I peer pressure you to go out and buy all these books! NOW! GO!

Old City Blues by Giannis Milonogiannis This is an awesome cyber punk whodunnit book starring awesome mechs and beautiful cars set in a near future Greece. Giannis is a crazy talented guy and he is also super young..so that is scary.

Pope Hats #2 by Ethan Riley PopeHats 2 guys! Man, Ethan Riley can sure draw. This book is such a pleasure to look at and then you read it and realize he is just as strong at writing as well. Great book.

King City by Brandon Graham Brandon Graham has a real inspiring individuality to his work. Every page is jammed full of puns, pretty ladies and funny dialogue. Under all that though is a really good story about growing up and making your own decisions.

Orc Stain by James Stokoe Orc Stain is awesome. So unique looking and the story and genre have never been done this way either. This is a long epic story that is being set up, hopefully it gets back to a good release sched in the new year. I miss my gronches!

Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol This is Vera Brosgol's premiere book. I have been a fan of her since she put her Grad film Snow-bo online seven or eight years ago..since then she has had her work in the Flight Anthologies and posted a long stream of awesome work online. Anya's Ghost is a spooky story of a russian girl in an american highschool with her unfriendly ghost. As with a lot of her work it takes a pretty twisted turn towards the end. Great book and apparently YA friendly!

Remake 2 by Lamar Abrams Lamar Abrams followup to the original remake continues to please. Funny, well drawn and irreverent, Remake is a love letter to fart jokes and Megaman

Even the Giants by Jesse Jacobs Jesse's work is very unique looking he uses two tones and leans on isometric perspective. The stories are down right weird too. The book has two main narratives, one about two giants living in the Arctic and another about two really creepy looking brothers jumping around a surreal anti reality. Fun book, check it out!

The Thickness #2 by various. This book boasts work from some of indie comics elite taking a crack at porn, including two others already on this list, Graham and Deforge. Not for the pure of heart, but definitely worth checking out!

20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa Urasawa was on my list last year. I am a big fan, 20th Century boys I believe wraps in 2012, this will be sad. A hell of a series with beautiful art and excellent characterization.

Wolves by Becky Cloonan Becky Cloonan is one of my favs, her inks are so black and smooth and her artistic sensibilites are really close in line to what I wish I could produce. Wolves takes all those things that I already love about her work and then jumps into my fav genre fantasy/horror. She couldn't do wrong.

Lose #3 by Michael Deforge Deforge is indie comics belle of the ball for a reason. Lose is awesome, twisted, unique and funny. Track down these books. They rad.

So that's it for this year. There are a bunch of other comics I love out there but the list was already getting long.. So go out there read these books and read thier favorites to find even more good stuff! Comics rule and so can you!

So this is the big screen I've been working on for the last while. The screening process was fairly painless on this one, the work on getting the strip ready for the printing took the lions share of the work. These are pretty big..I think they 15x22 inches..I got about ten good ones out of this run so I will prolly sell these and the Converted Protest print at future cons.

Here are a couple doodles for you guys. The warrior guy, I was thinking of this character, Scale, from Joe Abercrombie's books. His biggest role is in "The Heroes". I love his stuff, if you have a dark and gritty Fantasy fan in your life Joe Abercrombies books are some good ones!
The riot police officer is for a silk screening piece I recently did. I will be putting up that image soon as well. It's pretty cool I think.
So other than that, Don River is still updating. We're getting close to the end of that one. Hope you're all reading!

Well looks like I did a TinTin!

There is a big show coming up put on by The Beguiling. It's called Toronto Draws TinTin. It's illustrators and comic artists coming together and..well you know. The opening reception is Nov 2nd and then there is a blind auction later on...Nov 27th? Anyways, the show runs the whole month of November at the Steam Whistle Gallery so come and check it out!

As for my piece. I've recently gotten into screen printing. It is awesome. THis one in particular is six layers. It's printed on a very expensive paper from Arches and it's 100% B.A! As for theme, you might be able to guess who the New York Sewer creatures are if you look closely.

Hey you guys!

Soooooo...Word on the Street is this weekend! It's going to be totally BA. It's on Sunday Sept the 25th. It's FREE! I will be there w all sorts of friends. I'm sharing a booth with Julie Faulkner! Come on by, it will be a blast. BA LAST!

In other news I finished my anthology piece with AG Pasquella. I still got to do the tonals, which is slow going. Once I get those done, I'm going to pop the first page up here as promised.

In the next couple weeks we got 24 hour comic challenge coming up. I will be doing it again of course. This year it looks like it will be a private event though. I must say I am very sad to see it apparently winding down. It used to be a real big thing. I think losing McCLoud's involvment and then the Anthology's no longer coming out has knocked the wind out of it's sails. So it goes. I will keep doing em, love the 24hcc.

So last but not least. PSYCHIC DRAMA! The book is almost done. I put up page 110 this morning. I think it wraps around 120. You guys gotta check it out. Don't miss out!

Western Horror Anthology!

Hey guys, I've been working on this anthology piece the last few weeks. It is a nine pager for a Western horror themed book that Phil McClorey is putting out. My buddy AG Pasquella penned it.
As I write this I am inking the fourth page. I expect to have it finished next week. When that happens I will put this pages inks up for preview. I am really happy with how it's coming together. AG knocked this one out of the park and I'm psyched to be doing something with him again as he is all kinds of rad. Phil puts out some great work too so it's really exciting to be working with him. Anyhow, look for the inks next week! Hope you like the roughs!

Just got back from Fan Expo! It was a blast. Thanks Everyone who stopped by! You were all the best looking comic fans ever. EVER!

Grawlix Anthology!

So this week I've been working on my submission for the second Grawlix Anthology. I thought I would give you guys a peek at my process. This is one of the pages of roughs. I'm working differently on this book than my usual route. This time, I'm doing my roughs on the cintiq, printing them out and then inking directly over those roughs. Hopefully it works out. Roughing on the cintiq is incredible as far as laying out your action is concerned!

Guys TCAF was so so so so very good. I want to unload expletives on you kids but I know about your sensitive ears. I will try and keep it brief. Which is hard because of how rad the show was.

First off on a personal note. I've never had a more successful show. Fight Song sold out! All my other books moved as well. I also got the Grawlix anthology I'm a contributer in as well, it looks great. Great work to Dalton Sharp for putting that togehter. What a weekend. Thanks to everyone who bought my books. Every one was super nice and a blast to hang out with.

Secondly, the running of the show. Again top notch. Chris, Peter, Abe and the whole TCAF crew kill it every year. This year though was so sugar smooth. They had a green roomn for guests, people to run change for you and volenteers to help when you had to pee. Top notch. Great work sirs.

Thirdly. The guests. TCAF has an embarasement of riches guest wise. So to be excited about who your sitting with is expected. Saying that I was definitely the winner placement wise. I was flanked by two great artists in Niall Eccles and Danielle Corsetto. Right beside Neil was Brandon Grahm James Stokoe Marian Churchland and Marley Zarcone, who were the four people I was most excited to meet. They all lived up to my expectations and beyond. Brandon actually gave me a page out of his sketch book, which is, you know, super cool. So the table I had, great. I could not have chosen a better spot for myself.

I bought a lot of books and wished I had more money for all the other great things I saw. Seriously, what a year for new books. It wasn't just my own Fight Song. There was a ton of rad new books to buy and read. I'm excited to dig in over the next couple days. As seen above, I got some work to do!

There is so much more to tell, the drinking, the fighting, the orgies..on and on, but maybe for another day.

So whats new.. You know my webcomic Psychic Drama! It got to page 50 today! You guys caught up? Its pretty cool, check it out!

Last weekend was the Kazoo Festival in Guelph! The show is put on by the fine folks at the Dragon. A great store.Lots of great originals on the walls, Very clean, spacious, bright and welcoming. Its how I wish all comic stores could be. I was there alongside friends Jules of Promises fame and Adriana from Fall on me! It was a fun show. Sadly the weather didn't co operate but I think everyone had a great show despite it. I know I'm looking forward to next year.

In two weeks my fav show of the year is approaching. TCAF! There is a crazy glut of amazing talent coming. It is gonna be da bomb. Make sure to come out. I will have so much new stuff. The oft talked about Fight Song is alost finished and will be ready for TCAF. It is fantastic, so look forward to that..also I will have a six page short in the Grawlix anthology. Its bad ass too. Also here is a photo from the Wizard World convention this past weekend. It was a good time. I sat of course with Julie of Promises fame and was Flanked by indie comic giants Ben Rivers of Snow fame and Mr Brian Mclachlan of the world famous Princess Planet. We had a good lil table group going on. As for the show itself, it was much better than last year. So hopefully it can continue to build and be a viable third show for Toronto.

Psychic Drama

Hey guys! The big news is, my Website www.brianevinou.com is finally live. Its still under construction but its close enough now that I can show it to you guys feeling good about it!

Right now on the website I'm putting up my comic I finished a year and a half ago, called Jim and Jenn. Theres been a name change its now called Psychic Drama.

Above you'll see an example of changes I've made to the thirty pages that are currently up there. I feel a need to explain this a bit.. I'm not saying I'm going to do this amount of do over to every page but a large portion of these first 30 pages have seen this kind of facelift, I just wasn't comfortable with how they looked anymore. At a certain point the pages get good enough that I won't be making any more changes but for the next bit anyways, lots of changes. Jim and Jenn is a year and a half old, most of the first pages are more like two years old and I like to think I've improved a lot since then. So anyways, its a slightly better looking version that you guys get. I plan on posting 3 times a week. They will go up Mon Wed Fri. This comic is 120 pages long and as its finished you can count on your updates. Hope you guys like it, as I said its old. I learned a lot writing this, my apologies if its a bit clunky.

Back on the life drawing trail after a nice holidays. Posting for 2011 commence!

Now 2010, lets talk about the best of you. In comics.

For me, I will just throw down my favs of this year.

Tumor by my hombre Noel Tuazon and Fialkov. A dirty crime drama stinking so good of Noels distinctive inking style. Also a very nice printed book. Some sweet paper in this badboy.
Scott Pilgrim Vol 6 by O'Malley. A satisfying conclusion to the series that got me back into comics in a hard way. Great work and shouldn't be missed.
The Outfit by Darwyn Cooke. Dang, this Parker series keeps getting better. Darwyn kills it with his two tone stylings.
Super Pro Ko by Jarrett Williams. This was a nice surprise for me. Super fun Wrestling fun. Beautiful simple artwork inside. Very fun.
Koko be good by Jen Wang. First Second nails a winner with Jen Wang's first full length comic. Beautifully print quality is rewarded with fantastic watercolor comic, about coming to terms with oneself.
20th Century boys by Nokia Ursawa. This comic continues to rule. Ursawa mastery of suspense and ability to draw the most minute of expressions is incredible.
Afrodisiac by Jim Rugg. Jim Rugg is a super hero of comics. Hilarious.
Wilson by Daniel Clowes. What did you expect, its Clowes. This one is pretty mean, but also hilarious.
X'd out by Charles Burns. Typically wicked, Burns nails it. Is this a series or a one shot? It seems to be book one but I read a couple reviews that suggested its a one shot. I hope not. Great start?

Floppies!

I continue to purchase Walking Dead and Invincible. They are both great. This year allowed a few more into my rotation. Its all image.
Orc Stain, James Stokoe premiered his fantastic fantasy comic this year. Hilarious, fun, beautiful.
King City by Brandon Grahm. Full of puns hilarity adventure and excitment. Grahms simple unique style is dripping charm.
Skullkickers by Jim Zubkavich. A hell of a good time. Fantasy with highend fun. Great drawing and tight dialouge. Craaazy fun comics.

Webcomics!

Manly guys doing manly things,Kelly Turnbill- I met Kelly working on Ugly Americans. She is the best. Her comic is just as good.
Deep Down, Alex Diochen- Another coworker on Ugly. Alex has been fighting the Zuda fight for a few years now. He just recently launched his new comic Deep Down. So far its been one wicked fight scene. I can get on board with that.
Peeling Onions by Lezley Davidson- Slice of life auto bio comics. A thick slice of comedy and heart from Toronto own LD
And here are a list of other classics I'm continuing to love.

Dudes, I drew a cowboy. There was a full body, but it blew. So! I cropped it and here it is! I went to see True Grit, It was fantastic. GO SEE IT! This isn't supposed to be any of the characters, just some cowboy action. Hope you all like it!

Fight Song Preview

Hey guys, this is a preview of my next book FightSong! Its going to be a mini with two separate stories in it. Here are two panels from the first story. The pencils are done and I started inking it yesterday. This story weighs in at 22 pages. The other story is stuck at 10 pages penciled with at least another ten to go. Anyways, I guess the point is, that my next book for you guys will be a quite a bit fatter than Noway Jose and Don River.

In other news my website is super close to launching. Its actually already up but there are a couple things that need to be fixed before I announce it for public consumption. There are a couple tasty things I can tell you about it though.
1.It will be updating three times a week. Mon, Wed, Fri
2. The first comic on it will be the project previously known as Jim and Jenn.
3. The project previously known as Jim and Jenn has been buffed up as well, theres now tones and some of the earlier pages have been fixed up digitally for a sexy new experience.

So keep watching true believers, things keep happening!

I hope its getting better..This was actually a pretty rough week. I bought these charcoal pencils, then didn't have anything to sharpen em with. So half way through I had to switch back to the blue colerase. I felt like nothing was going right this week. I didn't get one I really like till the last one. The 30 min pose in the top left. Anyways, its all a process. I will be back there on Thursday, maybe that will be my break through day!

Back to the Song of Ice and Fire fanart! This is a pretty spoiler heavy image of one of my fav characters Jaime Lannister. Over the course of the four books hes become one of if not my fav character. Anyways, here he is at the Siege of Riverrun. I can't tell you how excited for the fifth book I am. Can't friggin wait. I've been reading Goerge RR Martin's Dreamsong series and getting my fix that way, but nothing else quite fills that void. Also toats pumped for the TV series. I hope its a hit, I wanna see season three happen in particular. Its my fav book of the series. Although book four is all Jaime, he makes that book.

I realized today with Jaime, I'm getting quite a bit of SOIAF fanart together. Almost in order: Dany, Catelyn and Summer, Jon Snow, Oberyn, Sandor, Loras and my page 100 project. 8 now! Maybe I will make a mini of these all someday. Might eventually even revisit those first couple attempts. Dany and Cat never looked better!

Well what else, busy working on anthology work and my own minis. So keep coming back. Theres more for you here coming.

I went life drawing yesterday. First time in four years. Pretty rough kick back to reality. If you don't use it you lose it. So I will be heading back next Thursday and hopefully consistently from now on. LIFE DRAWING!

In other news, finished the roughs for my Grawlix submission with A.G Pasquela, it is looking pretty good. We are also working on another one page submission for another anthology right now. Hopefully it gets in. We'll see, if not, I will be able to post it here, so win win right?

Hello! Yesterday was the Canzine! Sad news, I have no photos from the show. Good news, the show was fantastic. We {Noel Tauzon and I} were initially assigned a shitty table in the north room. Reaching into the Nth dimension and twisting reality just a little resulted in our being moved into the main hall beside Toronto comic royalty Erik Kim, Kean Soo and across from Indie darlings Vicki Nerino, Britt Wilson and visiting vagabond Phil McAndrew. The stage was set and a great show was had, by myself and Noel at least, hopefully for others as well.

Shouts out to all the beautiful people who stopped by and bought comics. You are indeed the most handsome of comic fans. Loyal blog visitor Anthony Tam, you the man.

Comic Jam contest from previous post update- I won!!! I get a cool illustrated Frankenstien book for the win. Its illustrated by comic horror veteran Bernie Wrightson. It is one of the definitive books that Frankenstiens monsters look is based on.

I have the next month off it looks like. Work has wrapped and we have short break until the next thing gets going. I will be using this time to work on my next mini, it is going to be called Fight Song. It will be a collection of two different fight comics I've started over the last two months. Hey dudes, long time no blog! Whats new, whats new. I recently took part in the 24 hour comic challenge at the Hairy T/ 4th Quadrant at Younge and Steeles. It was a real good time. I did ten pages of a new comic I hope to have finished by the end of Nov. Look for some posts about that more towards that time. What else, we recently finished up Ugly Americans season 1. Its showing on Comedy, Sundays at 12. Watch for it! Coming up, we have Canzine this coming weekend. So my good buddy JR is running this thing for the Station Gallery in Whitby called 40 Random acts of art. I guess he thinks up challenges for people, they do em, then they put em up in thier gallery. The above is the result of my challenge. I was looking at the Jim Rugg drawing the SF tribute book and thinking of maybe being clever with the challenge, but then I said F it. Its my week off. Leave the clever shit to the Educated elite. I'm going for the meat head MMA demographic.

The first season of Ugly Americans has wrapped. I am currently in the process of enjoying a week off work. I am drawing pictures and working on a short comic tentativily called Fight song. It is the dumbest book I've ever done. But I only have a week off and didn't have enough of my next big epic comic planned to start so this is what I work on. Also the reasons in the previous paragraph. Seriously, I watched showdown in Little Tokyo yesterday while working on this thing. Its almost as dumb as that movie.

Dudes, Fanexpo is this weekend. I will be there with Julie of Promises Promises fame and a special guest appearance by Noel Tauzon on the Saturday I believe... I sadly will be missing a lot of the show due to moving and responsibilities and stuff. I will be there Friday evening 6pm to Close and all of Saturday though. If your only coming SUnday and are looking for me, I am super sorry. I will be at word on the street though, so another chance there eh!
Sorry I have been so lax on posting recently. You can expect more soon though as my current contract is coming to a close soon. I have been doing Story Boards for Season 1.5 of Ugly Americans and shit is real crazy busy. Its almost done though, and fans, it looks fantastic and is friggin hilarious. So watch out. THis season is such a winner.

Hey, I'm back with more Song of Ice and fire fanart! Its Loras Tyrell, the knight of flowers! I just started listening to the audiobooks of the series at work so I'm reinvigorated to do more of these. Loras doesnt play much of a role in the first book but its pretty fun seeing these characters first appearances and thinking on how they develop in future volumes. You pick up more and more each time through with this series. George RR Martin is pretty rad.
Speaking of pretty rad. Today Bryan Lee O'Malley completed Scott Pilgrim volume 6. Scott Pilgrim got me right back into comics in a big way about 6 years ago. It in many ways is to blame for me doing my own comics. I'm so excited to read the finale and see how it all turns out. Even moreso I'm excited to see where O'Malley goes next. Congrats Mal!

You guys, TCAF was this weekend. It ended 4 and a half hours ago as of this writing. I finally am awake enough and regained the strength to leave my bed.

What a great weekend. A hell of a show as usual. Top notch guest list, super star volunteers, wicked nice guests and a generally well run show. I was in a new area called the Small Press Schooner. It was fun. I was a little out of place in the room but I did quite well and had a blast. Sold tons of books. The crowd was there to spend money, it was nice. Of course did my free sketching as usual and had a few unusual requests, a couple of which can be found above.

Wizard World Toronto

Ah Wizard World Toronto. What a strange beast you were. On the upside I met "Hacksaw" Jim Duggen. He got one of my books then came back later on to tell me how much he liked it! That is wicked! What a sweet guy. It was pretty funny, there was tons of people walking around with signed 2x4's. Every 40 minutes or so you would hear hacksaw from across the hall yelling out his trademark "HOOOO". Good times.
Other good times, almost selling out of my new book despite small amounts of people at the show. Hanging with other comic artists, in particular I would like to shout out my booth nieghbours Mike Hoffman, Evan Munday, Tyrone Macarthy, Sean Lebevre and Matt Joudrey. This show had the most comfortable seats of any convention I've been to. Also, lots of room behind the tables, some shows get a little tight. Not this one.

Negatives! Sad that the shows focus was so wild and unkempt. The advertising didnt do its job. The start times were way to early, particularly on the friday and sunday. I think its unnecasary for any show to start before noon on a sunday and especially on a friday. There was a fire alarm on the saturday right around 3, the peak time. It killed the momentum quite a bit. A lot of people were talking sabotage. Who know, I know Stan Lee was announced for hobbystar on Friday. Odd timing.

So I somehow managed to not read Dune when I was a younger fella. All my friends used to talk about it but it never held any interest to me. I recently picked it up on a whim. I'm now half way through Children of Dune. I love it. So good. I think it was the eastern imagary, the deserts, none of it held much appeal to me. I was way off, great sci fi. Anyways, heres a version of Paul that looks very little like hes described in the books and some phallic thing jumping outta the ground behind him.

Look for a lot more posts from me, I plan on putting up a lot of sketches now, not just more finished stuff. I havent inked in months, its all been pencils, I'm scared to see how much I've dropped off once I get back to it...

New years! A year in review

Oh 2009, what a strange year. I spent slightly more than half the year unemployed working on my 120 page book Jim and Jenn, which remains sitting on my desk in unpublished limbo. I then spent the rest of the year working on comedy networks upcoming show Ugly americans. Its going to be pretty good, thats for sure. There were three comic conventions, TCAF, Hobbystar and SPX. All good. Less concerts than last year, more CD's, more hockey and always comics.

This years comic highlight for me was discovering Nokia Ursawa, Monster, Pluto and 20th century boys were all really inspiring works. The year began with scott pilgrim volume 5 which was heart breaking and beautiful. Lot to cover in 6 but O'malley so far has only delivered. I'm sure that will be on my 2010 best of list. Invincible is still my favorite monthly floppie. In 09 I all but stopped buying marvel and dc books. The exceptions being when Quietly and Morrison put out anything together. DC and Marvel, you guys gotta quit the events, I've never cared less. In webcomics, Scary go round ended to make way for the promising bad machinary. That is a chenge that I'm enjoying so far for sure.

In music the yeah yeah yeahs, Tegan and sara, Okervil river, Joel Plaskett, Yo la tengo and the replacements were the big sonic winners in my apt.

In a bad year for movies the popcorn flicks won the day, all the usual suspects were also rans, that made room for star trek, avatar and Up to be my top three this year.

In 2010 I promise to finally finish don river, my 20 to 30 page river spirit comic. I promise to start on my next book, either, a scifi space epic, a 21st century fantasy comic or a giant robot book. I also promise to continue brushing my teeth and making updates on you my favorite blog at least once a month.

This is a piece I did for the forthcoming "IAMWIZARD" zine. It was initially being put together my friend Michal Majewski, who passed away this summer. The zine is still being put together as a tribute to him. I was having a hard time thinking what to put into the zine, then at a tribute concert for Mike, Leigh, the drummer in FATO showed up with a shirt that I drew for fato in 2000. This is a sequal of sorts to that shirt. Jewski is the one slapping the bass at the front.

So
So, I got a new job. Its taking up a lot of my time, hence the lack of posts. I'm sorry blog, I 'll try and do better! On a bright note, its prolly the coolest cartoon I've ever worked on.
Last month, I went to SPX, in Bathesda, Maryland along side Julie of Promises Promies fame. It was totally badass. Very inspiring, and I met and hung out with a lot of the people I was most excited to meet. Its neat, the event takes place in a hotel in the middle of terrible box store sprawls, so theres no where to go. You end up partying in everyones rooms, which is an amazing way to get to meet everyone. Most other conventions, everyone goes to random bars after the shows. But its not really an option in Bathesda. Anyways, loved it, looking forward to next year. Heres an interview Julie and I did at the end of day 2.. My usual convention sketches and party pics can be found on my flickr.. If you want to see me hobnobbing with some of comics finest, check it out. This is a anniversary card I did for my bro and his wife for thier first anniversary. Its based of a Hayden song, Clara liked. Hope you all like it.
A couple weeks ago, I did the 24 hour comic challenge in Oshawa. It was a blast. I finished 8 pages. I'm currently working on finishing that, it should be about 20 pages when its done. So look for that soon. Even sooner, I will be showing off my contribution to the "I am wizard" zine shortly. Its a super sized wonder. See you soon blog!

One of my very favorite webcomics, Scary go round, ended yesterday. I suggest everyone check it out, its crazy good. John Allison, its creator has a new strip starting shortly though to fill the void, so thats exciting. Still though, Shelly, Amy, Ryan and all the rest, have a special place in my heart. I couldnt resist using this as an excuse to draw a pinup of these great characters.

In other news, at the end of this month I will be America bound for SPX. I've never been to this show before and I'm very excited about it. To tie it all together as well Mister John Allison will be in attendance!

Anyways, hope you all like these, I know the design is pretty similair to my inside back cover for Jim and Jenn, but what can you do. Those Lost dvd designs, they stick with ya.

Fan expo has come and gone. It was a fun show. I drew, I sold I smiled! Thanks to everyone who came out, especially if you bought a book! Thanks to Zub for hosting a wicked party on friday! Thanks to Julie for being a swell table partner and thanks to our nieghbors, the boys over at Possum press and Shane for keeping us company too!

On a personal note, I had a great time showing off the dummy copies of my new book to everyone who would look. I lined up some excellent artists for pinups for the finished version once it comes out..{prolly not till december, at the earliest.} and I met a lot of great new people. All in all a good time. Jim and Jenn is done. Here is the inks of the cover with no color or any of the other finalized banners.

Finally.

All art, revisions, and other editing I had to do is done completly. I can explain the delay Mom, I mean Ben. It turns out I'm ocd and needed to have it just so.

The final tally is 119 pages. 1 page away from 50% larger than what I initially imagined. Jim and Jenn was only supposed to be in my life for 24 hours. Three years later its finally done. Its wild to look back at those initial 8 pages which led me to here. Including the 35 pages of the previous iteration of Jim and Jenn and demoed pages from this version, Jim and Jenn is over 160 pages total.. the progress from day one to now, I like to think is pretty big.

I'm really excited to get it all together for you all and let you all have a read. I think it turned out well, hopefully the hours and time put into it come across in the reading.

Tomorrow I start scanning all the pages and putting the book together in photoshop. Later this weekend I will post the first six pages. I plan on having a handful of dummy copies next weekend at fanexpo for people to peruse. The actual release date for the book is foggy. Please though, stop by and take a look at the last year of my life. I will be doing free sketches all weekend, have copies of Lucy Legacy and Noway Jose for sale. My booth is located in artists alley alongside my compatriots Julie Faulkner of Promises promises fame and Blair Kitchen he of the possum press!

Its summer in Toronto! Have you been watching all the pretty girls? Lucky you! This is what I imagine a pretty girl looks like. Its hard to know for sure. Ive not left my room in weeks. And why you ask....
...to finish a certain book! This here was {its no longer in the book} the first page of the current incarnation of Jim and Jenn that I did.

I've proclaimed Jim and Jenn finished in other places already. I will hold off on that proclamation here on my favorite blog though, untill it is 100% complete on the production end. Im still tweaking here and there, have a cover to draw and 100+ pages to letter. I anticipate though that sometime next week I will be posting the cover and the official proclamation along with maybe a five page preview for you my favorite blog readers! The end is so tantalizingly close, Im excited.

So yes, here is the six pager I did along with Aaron Broverman for the upcoming Black Bastard anthology. I've never worked with a writer before and it was a pleasure. Aaron's a class act! This was a fun project and a nice break from Jim and Jenn. I worked on full sized comic boards for the first time, I feel like it made a big difference. Anyways, it was a blast, thanks to Matthew Mohammed for trusting us with his creation. Keep on drawing kids!

The problem with appreciating Wolverine

The problem with having a wolverine appreciating month is that after that month is done, I still wanna appreciate.

I recently did a six page Black Bastard comic. It has a spoof of the Xmen in it, so Ive been drawing a knock off wolverine for a bit now. I guess it kind of inspired me to get going with the real deal. So heres some canucklehead action.

Hello blognation! So once upon a time I went to show called the paradise comic con. It was my first con and I met a fella who sat beside me named Jesse Rubenfeld, he does a comic called into the dust. Its a reimagining of the Wizard of Oz, its pretty toight. So TCAF has come and gone. It was a blast. Incredibly well run and insanely well attended. I would like to give a shout out to Chris Butcher for doing a hell of a job on putting together my fav show, the volenteers and all the people who came with big fat open wallets. Here is the cover image to Noway Jose HD Remix. This image rocking you in the face at 80 mph pretty much tells you all you need to know about this guy. He rides with the Raptors and gets chased around by Trex's. This is because he runs the show. I hopes you likes. This should have color on it as long as I dont blow the coloring..in which case it will stay B&W.The sweet back cover and front cover though isnt all you get in the new Noway Jose HD remix. You also get reinked interiors. Since October when I initially did this bad boy I've learned a trick or two. Heres an example of the changes your going to be seeing inside the book. If you wanna see more your going to have to come to TCAF and buy the mini. HAZAH!

This drawing was a blast. THe idea of the drawing is that you learn a lot about Jose just from this pic. Like now we know he has hung out with robots in the past, encountered the Empire. Its all there. I love world builder pics. For a comic thin on dialouge like Noway, I hope it adds some layers and richness to his story
This drawing will be the back cover, prolly stay in b&w, maybe tonals, I will have the cover for you sometime before the big event!

Destroyer!!

I went into the comic shop and bought my first marvel title in months. It was Destroyer, by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker. The premise of the book is that Destroyer's career has been on going since the forties and we're seeing him at the end of his days and how he wraps it all up. Its exciting for me to get Kirkman and Walker together again, the original team on my fav superhero book Invincible. More than that though the book is a super violent hoot, and beautifully executed. Even with the brain matter splattering the page every where it still retains the fun feel that Kirkman and Walker first showed us with Invincible, I recomend it!

Wolverine Appreciation Month.

I heard ya Tommy Guns. Heres my contribution.

So as I've mentioned on here before, The uncanney X-Men was my comic growing up. I started during the Fall of the Mutants, round issue 220. My favorite X-man like every other snot nosed kid was the Old Canucklehead, Wolverine, Logan, Weapon mutha F#$king X.
Anyways, when working on Jim and Jenn, I always start the day with little warmup doodles. This week I drew the colored wolverine on Monday, then my friend Tom on the ol Facebook called this month Wolverine appreciation month and I decided to follow his lead. So I did the bottom one yesterday and the sewer one today. I tell ya, that sewer one was not turning out. Theres a whole lower body under that water that looks like ass. Hence the sewer! Spooky setting for Wolverine? NO! Convienent way to cover up short comings in art! YES!
Time for bad news. I failed at Jim and Jenn. Its going to be done for TCAF, sadly it wont be printed. Financial coupled with scheduling problems have led me to push it back. Fear not though. I will be having a release party for when I have it printed early summer and it will definitly be available at The Hobbystar con in August SPX in Sept and Excellent comic stores around Toronto. I'm Sorry to have to report this, no one is more disapointed than me. The bright side though is that Im now planning on having tonals in the book and I will get to rejig the begining a bit to jazz up the book even more. For the TCAF attendees, I will have a very special small print run of Noway Jose available with an exciting amazing cover. So hopefully that will help you forgive me untill Jim and Jenn's explosive release! Sexy..

John Locke

This ones for you Benner
So this is one of my favorite characters from Lost, the popular television program, you might of heard of it. John Locke!!! I dont know what took me so long to get on board with this show. It is pretty rad. Im going to watch the finale of season 2 tonight and I cant wait. I'll definitly be up to date in time for the last season. Can it fill the hole BSG is going to leave in my heart in two weeks? We'll find out.
Also, I saw Watchmen yesterday afternoon. My capsule review, pretty good. Its definitly a much better translation than I thought possible. Theres a lot of layers of the book missing and the sense of parody and reconstruction of the comics genre. But the crux of the storys there and it was fun to see a lot of the big moments on screen. So cup slightly over half full. Im very relieved its not terrible though. I was expectiing 300 the sequal.

Theres a movie coming out on friday! Get this outta the way right off. Im pretty sure its going to stink. I hope it doesnt. This is a feeling I have though. Be aware.
Watchmen is definitly one of my fav books. Im doing a homage to it actually in Jim and Jenn using the 9 panel format that Dave Gibbons rocked in those pages. I saw Gibbons speak in Dec at a book store here in Toronto. It was really inspiring and got me thinking a lot about preperation and design. Anyways. I had already started Jim and Jenn at this point but in the future theres a few things I gleaned from his talk that I hope to use in future projects.
Hope you all like the drawing. Jim and Jenn is still on pace. I missed the sign up for Mocca. I suck. If anyone wants to share thier table with me I would be pleased to pay!!

Update: Im still on pace to have the book done for early april, with just enough time to get em printed before TCAF. Im on pace to have my first twenty page month for Feb, the shortest month of the year. Im going to kill April.

Man, did you guys hear that a certain game is coming out next week? I love the Street Fighter. Ken is definitly my favorite world warrior. Im looking forward to kicking some of my friends ass' on this bad boy come next week.
So Imworking pretty hard right now. I have roughly two months to finish Jim and Jenn before it goes to the printers. I have just enough time. Im doing a page a day and my focus is pretty singular right now. Im expecting to pick up the pace when I get to the ultra exciting finale. Also during subway and streetcar transit Ive been working on some cover and font concepts. Hopefully I'll have time to do a couple nice versions of some of the better ones and share them with you. I'd love to hear what you guys think.

Welcome back BSG! Who else watched the premiere of season 4.5 this weekend. Man that was some crazy TV. Here is Galactica's premiere fighter pilot Kara Thrace, you gotta love her.
While getting amped up watching the BSG I was thinking how few good scifi comics there are out there. I ended up jotting some ideas down for a comic and now Im thinking about it all the time. Whats sucks about comics though is they take so long Ive already decided how Im going to be spending the next year and a half, with finishing Jim and Jenn and moving onto my next project. They take so long you always end up having a back log of other wicked ideas to get too. I guess thats the appeal of the 24 hour comics challenges, its the one time a year you get to spew out an entire project out of your mind in one day {most of the time, see jim and jenn and Lucy Legacy}.
Also, yesterday was the third birthday of this my first blog. I wish you a happy birthday blog. We've been through some rough times together. Hopefully the content I drop on you now is better than the content when we started together. Heres to another three years Bloggity blog.

Check it out. Its Batman from Batman year 100! I really love this design. Paul Pope for me, can do no wrong. I lifted the palette from the cover of the Batman year 100 trade. So anyhow. Not much other than that to say. Still working on this here Jim and Jenn comic. Its getting there. By getting there I mean a third of the way in. The change to 2009 has really made me confront the reality of how little time I have left if I want to have this thing out for con season. It will be done. Its gotta be. Also the internet is the devil when it comes to avoiding work. Im very weak.

So its 2009! Hope its treating you all as well as me. Looking back 2008 was a pretty exciting year. Self publishing my first comic and hitting my first few conventions. Its been a great time. This year will see more of that. I'll be hitting a lot more conventions, this year even spreading my sphere of influence over our friends to the south, America. Spring 2009 will also see the release of Jim and Jenn which Im hoping you'll all enjoy. So keep your eyes on my blog and I'll be updating you to keep you in know about all the exciting news!

So heres my Chrsitmas card to you my dear readers, this ones for you! So today has been a great day, spent with family and friends. I hope yours was as good as mine! Two days ago we had our tenth annual festivus party, this year in the feats of strength I managed to make it into the finals against 9 time champion Gary Patrick. I thought I was doing well, I had him slightly over and had turned my shoulder, Gary looked at me and said, "are you ready?" Next thing I knew the table was over and we had a ten time festivus champion.... Today when sketching I wondered how the feats would go with my characters. Ray got a rough first round draw...prolly karma.
